About Us

Late Khan Bahadur Md. Jan an M.L.C. and ardent congressman, a philanthropist, having love, feelings and a compassionate heart for backward Muslim Community founded Md. Jan High School in 1933. Before founding the school he sought the advice of his some trusted friends and educationists such as Abdul Rahim of Haji Mohsin Square, K.B. Md. Asadullah, the librarian of the imperial library. A new building which belonged to Omar Hyat Khan at Ram Lochan Street (Phal Mandi Machua) was taken on rent where he started the school named Calcutta Muslim High School from class I to IX in 1933. The school was accorded affiliation after a year and began working as a full fledged Institution upto class X. But the growing no of students and expending academic activities made the space insufficient and K.B. Sk Md. Jan Saheb purchased a piece of land at 9B Bolai Dutta Street where a five storied building came into existence well built infrastructure and well ventilated with special class rooms The school never faced financial difficulty of any sort. The founder President not only met the deficit of the school from his personal fund but also gave free studentship and prizes to meritorious and deserving students.

During the World War II (1939 – 1945), The school was closed as the building was requisitioned by the state Govt. for civil defence purpose. After the War Khan Saheb restarted the school in 1950 under the name Md. Jan High School and Mr. Abdul Hamid was appointed as the first Headmaster of the school.

The school got affiliated in 1953 to West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Hence, the first batch of the school appeared at the board examination in 1954. The school was upgraded to erstwhile 11 class school in 1964 with science and arts section. Just at that time Mr. Akhter Hussain (M.A.B.T.) took charge as a permanent Headmaster. Three separate laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Biology were constructed with the Govt grant of Rs 25000. After 2years Commerce Section was started. After the abolition of 11 Class Schooling, A new system began with the introduction of 10+2. The school got recognition as +2 schools with Science, Arts and Commerce Streams in the year 1976.

Most important and the last gift of his benevolence was remarkable, monumental and unparallel. He was the sole authority in all school affairs and ran school administration under his supervision with the help of able and most competent Headmaster Mr. Akhter Hussain. It was purely a private institution but staffs ware getting D.A. from Govt of West Bengal. It was the year 1977 a proposal came from West Bengal Govt to bring our school in Grant – in – Aid scheme. It was discussed among the staff. Everybody knew that coming in Grant-in-Aid means complete adherence to the rule and the regulation of Govt of West Bengal and giving up the personal authority. This situation could never be expected from a capitalist. But our beloved Khan Bahadur was not only a capitalist but also a great man when the headmaster Mr. Akhter Hussain approached him to grant permission to bring our school into Grant – in – Aid scheme.Janab K B S K Jan put a simple question “What benefit will it bring to the school?” Headmaster, Mr. Akhter Hussain very humbly explained the innumerable benefits that school might gets. He readily agreed and said one thing only to be kept in mind that no poor boy is denied admission for want of money. He even did not talk about his own position in the school affairs nor ever tried for inclusion of any member of his family. This was his last gift and the greatest gift to the staff of the school and Muslim Community as the whole.

The legacy of Mr. K.B.Sk. Md. Jan was continued by respectable Headmasters Late Md. Akhter Hussain and Late Sk. Wajid Ali who did their best to turn the dream of Mr. K.B. Sk. Md Jan into a reality.

Late Sk Wajid Ali was always thoughtful for education of girls particularly in the field of Science and Commerce. He initiated the introduction of co-education in the school for Science and Commerce Stream in H.S. Section, but could not materialist as there was no lady teachers in the school which was essential criterion for co-education but his dream was fulfilled by Mr. Alamgir (H.M.) & Md.Nijzamuddin Khan (Ex-Secretary) in the year 2010 when W.B.C.H.S.E. granted permission for Co-education for Science and Commerce Stream that opened avenues for girls which is running successfully till date.

Hope the institution will continue to full fill the desires and objectives laid down by our beloved founder K.B. Sk. Md. Jan. At last the school pays its greatest tribute to our founder as well as staff of the school for providing excellence services in the field of imparting education particularly for our Muslim community in Kolkata and suburb.
